From the Jubilee Programme

The big news for the 2001-2 season was that "Strac is back". Former Kings Coach Rick Strachan returned to his old job. Steve Smillie, Greg Randall and Simon Howard were the first to sign along with newcomers Danny Meyers, and Paul Moran. Duncan Paterson joined along with Stuart Potts, Paul Sample and Jonathan Phillips. Mike Breadmore returned. The netminding spot was taken over by Domenic DeGiorgio. Aaron Shrieves and Mark McCoy joined after a few games.

Immediately Kings started their League campaign they were hit by a change in the rules. In their first game, home to Hull Thunder, Kings lost in overtime. But unlike previous seasons they did not get a point for being level at the end of 60 minutes. Two more losses were followed by a 3-1 win over top of the table Guildford - one of their best ever performances since entering the BNL - but then Kings went on an 11 match losing streak. This prompted changes in the squad as young British players Paul Sample, Ross Macintosh and Stuart Potts were released, along with the popular Steve Smillie. Jeff Daniels and Bryan Blair and GB international and Superleague player David Clarke joined the team. When Aaron was injured Finnish player Janne Ronkainen was brought in as a replacement and Dwayne Newman joined to replace Mark McCoy. This pepped the team up and they started a winning run of five games by beating a weakened Peterborough team 6-1. They then drew 3-3 with Guildford before losing narrowly to Basingstoke. A 4-4 draw at Coventry was followed by an amazing 6-1 win away at Fife Flyers, the first time a Kings team had ever won in the Kirkcaldy rink.

The remainder of the season saw Kings with mixed results, but for the first time in many seasons Kings supporters could come to the rink in a much more positive frame of mind. Kings hovered around the final play-off spot for most of the season, then achieving their play-off place in the most dramatic of circumstances. The final position rested between Kings and Paisley who had already postponed the fixture. It was to be the final game of the regular season - Wednesday night at Planet Ice. However, a motorway accident delayed the Paisley team and fans waited anxiously in the rink for 3 hours until the match finally faced off at 11 pm. In the end Kings proved their worth with a 5-0 victory and the play-off place was theirs - Rick had achieved his goal for the season.

In the League David Clarke top scored with 22+23 points, followed by Jeff with 16+25.
